Taxpayers getting bang for bond buck

Alpena Public Schools facilities continue to receive a facelift thanks to voters who in 2020 approved the sale of $33.9 million in bonds, News staff writer Temi Fadayomi reported recently.

Taxpayers repay that bond debt through property taxes.

Already, the district’s elementary schools and Thunder Bay Junior High School have been renovated, from the asbestos removal to new flooring to new heating systems.

Now, the district has begun a second phase of the bond-funded work: work on Alpena High School.

APS Superintendent Dave Rabbideau told Fadayomi the scope of work at the high school still is being worked out, but could include bathroom renovations for Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, asbestos removal, parking lot improvements, or other work could progress.

We’re glad to see such work progressing, showing the district is getting a good bang for its bond buck.
