Hosting foreign students good for all kids

Students from France, Spain, Mexico, and Denmark will join Alpena High School’s 1,300-student body this school year.

There, they’ll learn from Alpena High students what America’s all about and teach our students what life is like in their countries. They’ll help our students better understand the world around them and Alpena’s place in that world, and that can only make them better prepared for college or to enter America’s diverse workforce.

But, to make that happen, Alpena High needs you, Northeast Michiganders.

Lori Vought, Alpena High’s counselor and foreign exchange student coordinator who works with American Scandinavian Student Exchange to assist in the placement of foreign exchange students, said Alpena High still has dozens of international students who need to be assigned host families.

“If we don’t have host families, we don’t have exchange students,” she said.

Although the program typically runs for an entire year, meaning students remain with their host families until the school year ends, there is also a semester-long option.

We encourage everyone, especially parents of Alpena High students, to consider hosting a foreign exchange student. You can help the international student and our students broaden their horizons.
