The Alpena Downtown Development Authority needs you, representatives of downtown businesses and nonprofits.
The DDA found itself in a pickle this week when DDA board member Cory Canute resigned from the board because he couldn't fit board work into his busy schedule.
His resignation brought the number of DDA board members to seven.
Because DDAs are statutorily required to have at least eight board members, the board could conduct no further business after accepting Canute's resignation.
Now, the DDA hopes to expand its board to 10 members to provide some cushion in case other board members resign in the future.
We agree that's wise.
But it poses other difficulties, as having more board members means more people have to attend meetings to ensure the board has a quorum present to allow voting.
That's where you come in, downtown businesses and nonprofits.
We encourage anyone who thinks they can spare the time to apply for the DDA board.
The agency does a lot of important work, including organizing downtown events and improving the look of downtown through facade improvements and the like. The agency also has two very heavy topics on its plate right now: a proposed expansion of the DDA boundaries and proposed downtown parking meters.
More people's voices should be included in those discussions.
