What Disney vs. DeSantis means
Why the heck should you give two hoots about the ugly turf battle down in Florida between the combative Republican Gov. (and would-be president?) Ron DeSantis and the folks who run “the place where dreams come true,” better known as Disney World?
Let’s start with this: Raise your hand if you’ve ever been to the entertainment mecca for young and old alike. Now, raise your hand if you would vote for somebody who wants to make it more expensive for you and the kids or grandkids to visit, as the cost is already off the charts.
What is unfolding down in the Michigan of the south (since half our population is down there at any one time) is a classic bully governor vs. a giant corporation that employs more folks in Florida than anybody else.
Until DeSantis showed up, Florida’s government was pleased with the moola that Disney brought into the state and it gave the corporation the right to do whatever it wanted to do within a 40-mile radius.
The arrangement went sideways, however, when Disney started to stick Mickey’s nose into the ultra-conservative legislative agenda of Gov. DeSantis, who came unglued when the company advocated for gay rights.
“Under no circumstances should the state of Florida be subsidizing WOKE activities by allowing them to have their own government,” DeSantis told a delighted conservative audience at Hillsdale College last week during his first — but not last — foray into Michigan. “So, we took it away.”
He abolished the Disney board overseeing the property and replaced it with his own appointees of loyal disciples to clean up the Mouse House pronto.
But the plot thickens, as they say.
Before the DeSantis takeover, the board approved language that basically inoculated the company from any efforts by the new board to undo what Disney wanted to do.
“They are acting like they pulled one over on our state,” the get-even governor reflected, but he promised the GOP-controlled Florida legislature would do his bidding and eradicate Disney’s power, anyway.
So, at this point, you are still wondering, what has this got to do with me?
The governor is thinking about slapping new taxes on the Disney money-making machine, which you could be paying on your next visit.
“We’re going to look at things like taxes on hotels,” DeSantis warned. “We’ll look at things like tolls on the roads, and we’ll look at developing some of the property … they are not superior to the people of Florida.”
The company CEO, Bob Iger, told a stockholders meeting that the governor is angry and has decided to “punish the company for exercising a constitutional right. That just seems wrong to me.”
This looks like a Disney movie that does not end with “they lived happily ever after.”
