Consider seeking commissioner seat

By The Alpena News 2 min read

The Alpena County Board of Commissioners needs a new representative for its District 3, and we urge every adult who lives in that district to consider throwing their hat in the ring.

The board needs to replace Dave Karschnick, who died last week at age 82.

District 3 covers part of downtown Alpena and north of downtown. A detailed map of the commissioners' districts is available at alpenacounty.org/DocumentCenter/View/875/county-districts. To be eligible for the seat, you must live in and be a registered voter in District 3.

Those interested have until 4 p.m. May 5 to submit an application and a letter of interest to the Commissioner's Office at 720 W. Chisholm St., No. 7, Alpena, Michigan, 49707. Applications and letters also can be submitted to commissionersoffice@alpenacounty.org.

Call 989-356-0930 for more information. Applications are available at alpenacounty.org/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=34.

The board will make an appointment on May 9. The appointee will serve until the 2024 election.

Karschnick's shoes will certainly be big ones to fill, but we're sure someone in District 3 can step up.

Democracy works best when the people get involved in government -- especially local government, where decisions made by policymakers have the most direct impact on the people.

So, if you're sitting out there in District 3 wondering if you should throw your hat in the ring, you should. Your community needs you.

Here's hoping the commissioners have a slew of applicants to choose from so that the best voice for the people of District 3 can be chosen.

Starting at /week.
