In addition to the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the region's other natural wonders, one of the biggest draws for tourists coming to Northeast Michigan has to be downtown Alpena.
And, as the warmer months near, many plans are afoot to make downtown Alpena even more exciting in 2023, News staff writer Steve Schulwitz reported recently.
In the works:
∫ The Alpena Downtown Development Authority is currently accepting applications for the next round of the Fresh Waves mural project.
∫ On May 12, the DDA will recruit volunteers to plant flowers, pick up trash, and ready the downtown district for guests and residents.
∫ For $50, businesses and individuals can sponsor a tree base that will be filled with flowers. Businesses and individuals can have their name on a sign in the small flower garden.
∫ A new downtown event is planned for June 2 to 3. The Alpena Flower Festival will include flower displays placed downtown and local restaurants and bars will serve flower-themed drinks and meals.
∫ The DDA will request the Alpena Municipal Council close the alley alongside the Center Building so tables and chairs could be set up and, possibly, new lights installed.
Lots of exciting things are happening downtown that all of us should celebrate.
We say kudos to the DDA and its partners for making all of this possible, and we hope Northeast Michiganders will join in the festivities.
