Board, residents must work together on project

We read with interest News staff writer Julie Riddle’s recent article indicating that plans for a proposed Alcona County community hub have been put on hold as the Alcona County Commission on Aging Board of Directors decides its next move and whether plans for the project align with its mission of helping seniors.

A revised proposal for a 32,000-square-foot community center with an emphasis on senior services — with housing to follow — was to be voted on Tuesday, but the board decided to postpone the vote after an addendum to the plan “blindsided” several board members.

Previous versions of the project have called for more square footage, a community center for all ages, housing units, and space for seniors.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Alcona County has the second-oldest median age in the state. With that in mind, any housing, even partial housing, would stand to benefit Alcona County’s residents.

After various surveys and proposed project changes, the time has come to make a final decision. Residents deserve to know what’s going on in their community and interest in the project is high — as evidenced by public comment both for and against the community center at the meeting.

Whatever the final decision, the board must work together with Alcona County residents to determine the best path forward. The clock is ticking and the board must work to find a solution that benefits as many people as possible.
