Seasoned Swami

It is time to call it a season as Swami takes his turban off and tucks it away until next year. Is football season getting shorter or is time going by faster as Swami gets older?

It is probably the same for high school athletics: You enter as a freshman thinking you have a long four years. Bu time goes by all too fast and before you know it it’s Senior Night.

That being said, Swami wishes the best to the seniors and to the underclassmen. Let’s see if the All-Knowing-One can go out on a high note.

ALPENA (1-7) at ST. JOHNS (2-6) — Friday — 7 p.m. — The end of the season cannot come fast enough for Alpena, after being extremely flat against Escanaba in its last home game. At times, it looked like Alpena might break its losing streak, but the air went out of the balloon when the Eskymos kept capitalizing on Wildcat mistakes.

St. Johns plays a brutal schedule and their record shows it. The Redwings held off Ionia in the final minutes last week and stopped a 2-point conversion for a 28-26 win. The Redwings will keep the ball on the ground twice as much as they do through the air. Mark Bendele is a major force in the running game and carried the ball 21 times for 123 yards last week. Quarterback Carson Pieters only threw for a total of 74 yards, but found Jack Ballard for a touchdown and also found time to rush for a score.

It is not known at press time who will be under center for Alpena as Jake Zann made a touchdown saving tackle, but paid the price. Brady Pagels was inserted, leading the Wildcats to their final touchdown. Zann and Pagels hooked up for two touchdowns and Kaleb Donajkowski led the ground attack with 144 yards.

Swami cannot put his finger on how this season went downhill for the Wildcats after they played so well in the first two games. One feels bad for all the effort that was put in, to have so little to show for it.

Swami Sez: St. Johns 24, Alpena 13.

ROGERS CITY (8-0) at HILLMAN (3-5) — Friday — 7 p.m. — It would be the perfect ending to a dismal season for Hillman with an upset win against Rogers City. A win may even give Hillman a chance at the playoffs.

In was business as usual for the Hurons last week in a 42-26 win over Alcona. The Tigers had a slim lead at half only to see Rogers City come storming back in the second half as quarterback Spencer Whitford, Isaac Paul and Hayden Hentkowski combined to put the Hurons out front for good.

In a Thursday night win over Atlanta, Hillman quarterback A.J. Jones worked his magic to wideout Trenton Taratuta to get up on the Huskies early, then backs London Achatz and Easton Hunt broke the game open with runs that broke the back of the Atlanta defense.

Swami Sez: Rogers City 52, Hillman 18.

AU GRES (7-1) at POSEN (7-1) — Friday — 7 p.m. — Both Au Gres and Posen will have their seasons extended through next weekend. Posen put the hammer down against Atlanta last week, 71-38. Quarterback Jack Romel was on top of his game, passing for five touchdowns, to go along with 171 yards. Romel added on another 79 yards on the ground for another touchdown. Cole Krajniak and Ethan Romel led the way on the rushing side with 220 and 183 yards respectively, in a game that produced plus 400 rushing yards. Defensively Lucas Mercier, Eli Chojnacki and Josh Gardener did their part in shutting down the Huskies offense.

Swami’s questions if anyone can anyone or any defense stop Au Gres running back Keagan Bender? One on one, the answer is no, gang tackling there is a chance of cutting down yardage. The All-Knowing-One has seen Posen’s defense step up when needed, and it is not a track meet to the end zone with the Vikings on the field. Only head-to-head competition favors the Wolverines, which makes one think they might have the upper hand in this finale.

Swami Sez: Au Gres 48, Posen 38.

ALCONA (6-2) at WHITTEMORE-PRESCOTT (3-5) — Friday — 7 p.m. — Alcona’s season took a blow the last two weeks. The Tigers hung with Rogers City in the first half, but the Huron defense controlled the line of scrimmage in the second resulting in a win.

The Hurons did not have an answer for quarterback Garrett Somers having two untouched touchdowns in the first half. Somers also led the rushing attack with 127 yards, in addition to, Hayden Johnston with 91. Defensively the Tigers Nathan Nardi and Evan Borsvold had double digit tackles with 14 and 10 respectively.

Whittemore-Prescott played in the game of the century pulling out a 68-62 win over Mio. In a game that saw Mio break two passing records, it was the rushing attack of the Cardinals that prevailed. The Cardinals did it without throwing a single pass, 616 yards on the ground, behind Sam Vyner and Dillan Parent rushing 64 times.

The Tigers have doubled the Cardinals in scoring and might have an advantage. If the Cardinals can control the rushing game, then that might change the outcome. The Tigers like to strike quickly, but what if they can’t?

Swami Sez: Alcona 32, Whittemore-Prescott 14.
