Congrats on retirement, Judy Greer

It’s hard to imagine many more thankless but oh-so-important jobs than that of a public health official.

Few people even thought about their public health departments before the coronavirus pandemic, even though those departments helped keep our restaurants clean, our drinking water safe, our beaches disease-free, and more. Those departments have been underfunded and understaffed for years.

Then the pandemic hit, and those departments had to rush into overdrive, long hours keeping track of COVID-19 stats, helping to coordinate COVID-19 tests and then COVID-19 vaccinations. Many people sure appreciated their health department then, but others who’d never heard of District Health Department No. 4 suddenly loathed the department for propagating what they saw as falsehoods about the coronavirus.

Judy Greer has lived through 33 years of that, News staff writer Barbara Woodham reported recently.

Starting as a secretary in 1988, Greer worked her way up to deputy health officer at District Health Department No. 4. She recently retired.

We’re grateful to Greer and all of her coworkers at District Health Department No. 4 and to those at District Health Department No. 2 for keeping us safe and healthy.

Congratulations on your retirement, Greer! Much deserved.
