It always warms our heart to hear of the good deeds area residents do for one another.
And, in times of need, our neighbors always seem to rise to the challenge by reaching out and helping.
Earlier this month, an anonymous person once again continued a tradition that began years ago in the local red kettles of the Salvation Army. Someone went to five red kettle locations around Alpena and, in each, dropped five $100 bills folded together and held by a paper clip.
Thanks to those contributions, the Salvation Army was able to raise $2,500 in that day from the generosity of that anonymous donor.
In a year when every dollar will go a long way in helping to meet area needs, the gift was even more meaningful than in years past.
And the generosity of local residents does not end there.
Giving Tuesday was held earlier this month, and, in the sixth year of hosting the event locally, the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan acted as a collection center for 50 nonprofits. In 24 hours, area residents donated a combined $233,653 to those 50 groups, setting an all-time high for CFNEM officials.
"Honestly, we weren't sure what to expect for 2020 in such a tough year …," said CFNEM Director Patrick Heraghty. "Eclipsing last year's total by more than $16,000 is a huge win for these organizations and our communities."
Yes it is.
Once again your generosity is amazing.
