Congrats, Alpena hospital, on safety score

MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena recently received an A in a national patient safety report.

The Leapfrog Group said the hospital saw considerable achievement in its handwashing and ability to treat infections in the urinary tract, News staff writer Crystal Nelson recently reported. The hospital has also made gains, and now scores above average, in its leadership to prevent errors and its communication about medicines, with nurses, and with doctors.

Those and other improvements helped the hospital hit the top spot in the most recent rankings after scoring a C in fall 2019.

We are proud of the hospital’s improvements and say congratulations to the leadership there and the entire staff.

The hospital is one of our community’s most valuable assets — even more so now, amid the coronavirus pandemic.

And it’s important that patients know they’re getting the best care possible when they visit.

Even back when the hospital posted a more middling score from Leapfrog, we know employees there were doing all they could to improve their metrics. The latest Leapfrog report says there’s still room for improvement — that’s true at any hospital — but we know the MidMichigan team is working to turn things around there, too.

Northeast Michigan should feel confident in the care they’ll receive at the Alpena hospital, and the latest Leapfrog score only helps.

Keep up the good work, hospital team.
