Bring your gun, leave your T-shirt

As you head to the polls on Tuesday to vote in Michigan, you can carry a gun if you so desire, but don’t you dare wear that “Keep America Great Again” hat or a “Come on, Man” Biden for President T-shirt.

Can the world get any crazier?

The Michigan Court of Appeals upheld citizens’ rights to openly carry firearms this week, contradicting a directive of Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson that guns are prohibited at polling places.

By allowing citizens to carry, the justices said state law already prohibits voter intimidation, thus there was no need for further directives.

As for election-related clothing and gear, don’t come wearing it to the polls on Tuesday. Michigan has long prohibited election clothing, pins, buttons or other campaign material to be present at the polls. The law restricts such items within 100 feet of an entrance to a polling place.

If you forget and wear a button, a precinct worker will ask you to remove it.

Finally, stay safe at the polls Tuesday.

Regarding COVID-19 concerns, wear a mask or face covering which covers both your nose and mouth. Maintain a distance of six feet between you and the next person.

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

In August, we found Alpena County poll workers doing an outstanding job of sanitizing and cleaning stations throughout the process. We expect the same procedures will be in place Tuesday, as well.

By all means, get out and vote, but do so safely.
