Stay vigilant

Now is not the time to let our guard down.

Most of Michigan’s economy has reopened after months of harsh measures — stay-home orders, business closures, and more — slowed the spread of the coronavirus.

But, with that reopening, public health officials asked us to maintain certain precautions: Wear our face masks in public, stay six feet away from people outside our household, and continue thoroughly and regularly washing our hands.

There are consequences when those guidelines aren’t followed. One night of unguarded revelry at an East Lansing bar led to 170 new cases of COVID-19, prompting Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to close indoor bar service in most of the state. Continuing surges have forced Whitmer to crack down on her mask rule.

Elsewhere in the country, unheeded warnings have led to record surges in new infections, forcing new closures and lockdowns.

We want to avoid that as much as possible.

And we also must remember that following pandemic precautions is not just about protecting ourselves, but about protecting our coworkers, our children, our spouses, our parents and grandparents, our neighbors.

And so little is asked of us. Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Keep your distance.

We have won many a battle against the virus, but the war isn’t over.

We have to stay vigilant.
