Hoping Alpena gets to reach for the stars

We keep following with great interest the Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association and their continued efforts to bring space missions to the state.

And, as we do, we keep hoping that Northeast Michigan plays an important role in those space efforts.

We understand that association members are close to announcing their choice of a location that would handle low-orbit satellite launches. Several Northeast Michigan communities are in the running for that facility.

At the same time, the association is now seeking letters of interest from communities hopeful in securing a satellite command and control center.

Admittedly, the thought of both facilities being located in this region is almost too good to wish for, but that is exactly what we are doing right now.

Imagine the jobs that would come with either facility.

In a news article this week, Mike Mahler, director of economic development at the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce, said the proposed project is a “regional initiative” — one that would add quality high-tech jobs to the region.

A decision on the launch facility is expected this month.
