Please, vote to support our library

The Alpena County Library is, in our estimation, one of the best libraries in the nation.

The programs and events it offers for people of all ages is second to none. Compared to libraries in larger cities, with more of a tax base from which to draw, our library can hold its own and, in some instances, offers more.

That is why we urge Alpena County voters Tuesday to head to the polls and vote “yes” on the library proposal that would replace an existing millage, which expired Dec. 1 of last year.

Library officials are seeking the same millage amount they had, or 0.25 mills. That would cost the owner of a $100,000 house about $12.50 a year.

The millage would run for 20 years and would be used by staff as part of the $3.7 million renovation at the library. That renovation is aimed at removing areas identified as containing asbestos that were found as the staff updated its heating and cooling system.

This week, the millage also received the endorsement of state Sen. Jim Stamas, R-Midland, who represents Northeast Michigan.

“As someone who has served on the Library of Michigan board, I know how important our libraries are to our communities,” said Stamas. “I support the millage renewal so that the library can continue to serve Alpena-area families for generations to come.”

And so do we. Vote in favor of the library millage.
