Hoorah for the county fair

Fair time is a wonderful time of year in any town, but especially so in a small, tight-knit community such as ours.

The midway rides and games, the 4-H barns, the pie-eating contests, and the bump ‘n’ runs. Fairs are just good, old-timey fun that any family can enjoy.

The Alpena County Fair is underway now at the fairgrounds on South 11th Avenue and continue through Sunday.

As reporter Steve Schulwitz told us in Saturday’s edition, the county Fair Board acknowledged the disappointment some residents and visitors had in last year’s fair. The rides were especially slim after the midway vendor double-booked itself to get a new contract in Alpena.

We recognize, too, that the fair was injured when former Fair Board treasurer Bradley Avery embezzled thousands of dollars. He was sentenced earlier this year to six months in jail and a year’s probation and was ordered to pay restitution.

This year, it appears the fair has bounced back heartily, with a full slate of rides and several events that haven’t been seen in a number of years, including the Superkicker rodeo.

To all of the organizers and others behind the fair, we say congratulations on what promises to be a stellar year for fair time.

To all of our readers, we say take some time to get out and enjoy the fair.
