Stay cool this weekend

Temperatures are expected to climb over 90 degrees in Alpena on Friday.

While that’s a far cry from the 100-plus heat indices expected across much of the country this weekend, it is nothing to sneeze at and can be dangerous, especially for children and the eldery.

We encourage our readers to take precautions. Below are some tips from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

∫ Stay cool by staying in air conditioning as much as possible –even if you have to go to a store or mall — or taking a cool bath or going for a swim. “Even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat,” the CDC says.

∫ Limit rigorous outdoor activity to the morning or evening, when it’s coolest, and cut back on exercise.

∫ Put on sunscreen with an SPF rating of 15 or higher a half-hour before going outdoors in the sun.

∫ Avoid hot and heavy meals.

∫ Drink lots and lots of water.

∫ NEVER leave children or pets in an unattended car.

The Weather Service says we should be back down into the low-80s by Saturday and mid-70s by Sunday. If we take the right precautions, we can make it through.

Stay safe out there, folks!
