Avenue of Flags provides patriotic pride for Alpena

Alpena sure knows how to show its patriotism.

The 4th of July always has been a special day in town, but now area residents can add several more days to that list.

Residents still are talking about the impact that the Avenue of Flags had on them over Memorial Day weekend. A joint project of the Alpena Boosters and Kiwanis clubs, U.S. flags lined the bi-path from Little Flanders Field along Washington to Washington Avenue Park at South 11th Avenue.

The display was breathtaking. Very powerful in its visual impact, it left no doubt about how our community embraces its patriotic roots.

If you missed the first display, don’t despair as more showings are scheduled.

The next display will be for Flag Day — Wednesday, June 14. After that the flags will be up for the Fourth of July, Patriots Day and Veterans Day.

The display made us proud to call Alpena our home. They are a wonderful tribute to the fallen heroes of the region.

A special thanks is extended to members of the Boosters and Kiwanis clubs for making this project a reality.
