Kids are back in school, let’s keep them safe

Today marks the first day of school around the region. Some kids are excited about the day while others may be dreading the end of summer vacation.

In both instances, their minds might not be focused on safety and they could be putting themselves in harm’s way as they head to school. That is where motorists need to increase their awareness of the road.

It’s a guarantee there will be some students who dash out from between cars either heading into or away from the school. In their haste, they may not look both ways before rushing into a street. Keep an eye out for them.

So too, there might be kids who hurry to a bus stop or through a crosswalk. They may or may not look for you as you drive. That’s why it is imperative that you look out for them.

In addition to keeping an eye out for kids, be diligent about following all traffic rules. Be sure to stop for buses, stop at crosswalks and keep your speed down in school zones. These are basic rules all drivers must follow, but even the most cautious driver needs a reminder from time to time.

This is a special time in the region, as our schools become hubs of activity and learning. It’s up to all of us to make sure our children are safe as they embark on a new school year.
