Staying clear of Trump bandwagon

I might have to admit I was wrong. I know, as hard to believe as that might sound, I should probably just admit it now.

In conversations late last year my wife Diane turned to me for assurance that there was no way Donald Trump ever could secure the Republican presidential nomination. I looked at her with confidence and assured her that would never happen- that by her birthday in April someone else would have emerged from the pack and would take over the lead.

So much for my prognostication. While possible Trump might not have things wrapped up by her birthday, it doesn’t look good. I guess that is why I shouldn’t venture into fortune telling.

Diane, as much as I hate to admit this, it appears I was wrong.

As Michigan voters head to the polls Tuesday to vote in our presidential primary, unless some of the other GOP candidates can pull off some upsets in primaries this week and next, Trump seems now on the fast track to a party nomination.

Which, in my estimation, would be akin to a train wreck. There is no way – zilch, zip, zero, nada – that I ever would support a Trump presidential bid. And, from the stories I have read from newspapers around the country this week, I am not alone. It appears now that despite the fact Trump is cruising through the primaries, the real battle he will face this summer not only will be from the Democrat’s candidate (presumably Hillary Clinton) but also trying to convince voters like me (conservative leaning voters) that he isn’t the devil incarnate.

CNN ran a story Wednesday after Super Tuesday’s election results that indicated the GOP was at a crossroads with what to do with Trump – either rally behind him or abandon ship and start over.

It amazes me how a party was given a clear path to the presidency this year, yet couldn’t come up with an electable candidate. And yes, by that statement I have serious reservations that Trump is electable. I believe Trump has indeed played into the huge voter dissatisfaction across the country during these primaries, which helps to explain his popularity. However, I also believe when voters this summer start thinking through the process, and who ultimately they believe would be the most “presidential” in a time of crisis, I think Trump starts losing ground in a hurry.

Thus, I was not surprised by the latest Rasmussen Report poll released Wednesday that showed, for the first time since the campaigning began last year, in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup between Clinton and Trump, Hillary has pulled ahead. In a poll conducted Tuesday night, Clinton received 41 percent approval, while Trump got 36 percent. As a means of comparison, in the same hypothetical matchup conducted in October of last year, Trump received 38 percent to Clinton’s 36 percent.

One has to consider when looking at poll results like this, where Trump’s support is basically the same as it was months ago, whether he has “peaked out” in popularity with the public.

And, the polls this week got even more interesting when on Thursday the Rasmussen group released this finding: Forty-nine percent of likely U.S. voters said they would “definitely” vote against Trump if he were the GOP presidential nominee, compared to 42 percent who said the same thing about Clinton as the Democrat nominee.

There also is the consideration of what a headliner like Trump would do to other GOP candidates on the ballot. In conversations I have had with several in Michigan, few candidates are eager to embrace that possibility and some are in fact fearful as to what that might mean for their own chances with Trump at the top of the ballot.

Tuesday I will be voting in our state’s presidential primary, and I will ask for a GOP ballot. While I will keep my personal preference for president indeed that – personal, I will readily share with you this morning that Trump will not be receiving my support.

I’d rather dance with a skunk and hug a porcupine before casting my vote his way.
