Response to recall

These views are my own and not necessarily those of the board or my colleagues.

When it comes to Alpena Public Schools Board of Education, I vote with common sense and fiscal responsibility, and FULLY stand by the three votes that a small group is trying to recall me for. The decisions for the votes were made carefully, and I came to my conclusions by listening to the input of the community and fellow board members. This reflects my shared commitment to what’s best for our students and the taxpayers. I am hopeful media outlets will provide the opportunity to explain decisions fully to the public, beyond the word limit in this letter to the editor, allowing corrections for the misinformation being circulated by the public.

Hiring Goodrich: This was the right choice for the high school asphalt paving project. Spending less than half of a percent more upfront guaranteed top-quality work and materials avoiding issues down the road. This meant the kids could walk into school on the first day without delay and it saved taxpayer dollars; a practical decision any parent or neighbor can appreciate.

Hiring an additional law firm: Common practice for school districts. There’s no retainer, and their hourly rate is lower than our current firm. This gives the district more flexibility while keeping costs down.

Rain Garden: I voted no for the proposed rain garden because there was no plan for upkeep, no committed volunteers, and no funding for ongoing maintenance. Approving a project like that with would have been irresponsible and put an additional burden on school resources.

Each of the votes reflects my commitment to accountability, common sense, and fiscal responsibility. I stand by these choices because I believe I am doing what is right for the district.
