Appreciate the successes!

January brought us chilling temperatures, but Alpena residents fostered a warm environment for the 14th Annual Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s International Film Festival. The amazing filmmakers displayed journeys of self-discovery, seeking out unchartered territories, and making positive changes. Alpena’s outreach through NOAA emphasizes our ongoing responsibility for the preservation of our Great Lakes.

The people within each film and their dedication to their cause are undeniably impressive, including topics of plastics in the water, shutting down line five, kite boarding on the sea, helping military veterans, bringing back the ancient lake sturgeon – the dinosaurs of our lakes, and deep dives to explore the ocean bottoms. The opportunity for participants to learn, see old friends and make new acquaintances is another positive offshoot. I left with hope in my soul for a world that will be better for our future residents and knowledge that with these great leaders, we can make a difference.

A warm thank you to those who organized this event for the schools, Rogers City, Alpena, and Alcona Counties, including Stepanie Gandulla, Jeff Gray and all the employees and volunteers at NOAA. It is inspiring to be a part of a community that, despite our differences, comes together and understands the importance of making positive change for our World.

No doubt these days there is much to dislike – from the weather to local disputes, crime, taxes and of course, politics. No doubt it is important to stand up for your beliefs. But please also be involved in, thank those responsible for, and appreciate all the good life offers: The successes of NOAA, community, friendship, opportunities, and yes, even a little bit of sun peeking through the clouds on a chilly day.
