A workforce update from Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium

Workforce development doesn’t stand still — and neither can we.

Across Northeast Michigan, rapid changes in technology, global markets, and economic policy are affecting both employers and workers. Conversations about artificial intelligence, tariffs, supply chains, and shifting public funding aren’t just national headlines — they have real impacts on local businesses and families.

At Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium, our role is to help our region navigate that change with confidence.

For employers, that means adapting to new technologies, rising costs, and a competitive labor market. We are helping businesses recruit and retain employees, upskill their current workforce, develop apprenticeship programs, and access training resources that strengthen their talent pipelines right here in our communities.

For jobseekers, today’s job market can feel uncertain and fast-moving. We are seeing growing demand for short-term, skills-based training, digital literacy support, and guidance for individuals re-entering the workforce or exploring careers for the first time. Workforce development today is about more than job placement — it’s about building skills, removing barriers, and creating long-term stability.

At the same time, public workforce funding is becoming more limited and unpredictable. We are responding by strengthening partnerships, pursuing new funding opportunities, and focusing our resources where they make the greatest impact — while remaining a trusted, reliable partner for employers and jobseekers alike.

Workforce development is ultimately about the future of our communities. When businesses can grow and residents can access good careers, Northeast Michigan thrives.
