Eyes on the school board
Our community has probably noticed many Letters to the Editor the past few months, raising concerns about the Alpena Public Schools Board. I was asked why I am spending my time and energy on this.
Project 2025 agenda for public education includes the elimination of the US Department of Education and the diversion of public funds to private school voucher programs. While the Department of Education is not entirely abolished, it’s undergoing a major transformation that could significantly alter its role and landscape of education in the US.
This could lead to the closure of public schools and the exclusion of low-income students. The plan promotes voucher programs and charter schools, while reducing funding for public K-12 education, potentially increasing disparities in education quality across states.
Lawson, Dziesinski, MacArthur, and Costain seem to be leading APS in this direction. They put our public schools in jeopardy by NOT awarding an asphalt bid to the lowest bidder, hiring a second law firm, Kallman Law (wasting taxpayer dollars), promoting a discriminatory bathroom policy that could expose APS to potential lawsuits, and voting down a grant for a rain garden that would have benefited our students.
Public schools play a crucial role in providing accessible education, promoting equality, and fostering community engagement, which are essential for a thriving society. Public education is not just about academic learning, it also prepares students to become responsible and engaged citizens. Schools teach essential social skills, teamwork, and a sense of shared responsibility, which is crucial for active participation in today’s society. An educated populace is better equipped to contribute positively to their communities and make informed decisions. Investing in public education has significant economic benefits.
This summarizes why I and several community members have eyes on this School Board and are informing the community!
