William "Bill" Stanley Smigelski, 73, of Alpena passed away Thursday, October 8, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family.
Bill was born in Alpena on September 23, 1953, to the late Stanley and Charlotte (Castrop) Smigelski and married Bert Thomas (Person) on August 7, 1999.
Bill had a deep love for farming and took great pride in working on the family farm. He also had a passion for working on cars, especially taking them apart, figuring out how everything worked, and putting them back together again. Whether he was out on the farm or under the hood of a car, Bill loved working with his hands and had a natural talent for fixing things. He was very active with the Thunder Bay 250 Snowmobile races that his dad helped run for many years. Bill was a part of many things throughout his life, including Ducks Unlimited, NRA, Sportsman's Club, and being a member of the Republican Party. Bill was an avid outdoorsman.
Bill graduated from Central Michigan University in 1975 with summa cum laude honors. Bill graduated from Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio in 1980 with cum laude honors. He has been a part of the Michigan Bar Association for 40 plus years. He then went on to be a partner in 1985 of Gillard, Bauer, Mazrum, Florip, Smigelski & Gulden attorneys at law then went on to retire in 2020
Surviving are his wife, Bert; daughter, Liz (Josh Morasky) Smigelski; grandson, Braylon Bushey; stepson, Christian (Kate) Person; and Bill's dog, Ali; best friend, Bill Keskimaki, who considered Bill as a brother from different mothers, and a very dear friend Barb Crittenden.
Bill was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Addison.
A celebration of life will take place at the Bannan Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, from 2-6 p.m.
