It is with a sad heart that we announce Howard William (Bill) McConnell, a lifelong resident of Alpena, died peacefully on Sept. 30, 2026, at the age of 90.
Howard William McConnell was born in Alpena on Dec. 20, 1935, to Howard and Margaret (Burnash) McConnell. He grew up in Alpena and developed a strong love for his family, his community, and the many activities that would remain an important part of his life. On Feb. 4, 1956, Howard married the love of his life, Mary Goudy. Together, they shared 70 wonderful years of marriage, building a family and a lifetime of memories together.
He proudly served in the Army National Guard. Bill dedicated 43 years of his working life to Besser Company before retiring. His career was an important part of his life, but his greatest pride was always his family. He was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church and served as a trustee, usher, and member of the Men's Club.
Bill loved being outdoors and staying active. He enjoyed competing in horse shows and rodeos throughout Northern Michigan. He also enjoyed softball, hockey, basketball, golf, and bowling. He coached hockey and served as an assistant coach for Little League softball. He played in the Alpena Men's Golf League and enjoyed being part of The Besser Golf League. Whether he was participating, coaching or cheering on his children and grandchildren, Howard loved being around sports and the people who shared his interests. Aside from family and sports, his other favorite passion was woodworking, and lending a helping hand to whoever needed it.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Mary; his children, Mark McConnell; Laurie (Bryan) Donakowski; Peggy (Mike) Humm; Doug McConnell; grandchildren, Jessica (Mike Prosinski) Bell, William Holsworth, Catherine (Brian) Kauffman, Ashley McConnell, Erica Digue, Brett (Larissa) Digue, Brandon McConnell, Patrick (Alyse) Humm. He is also survived by his step-grandchildren, Nicole (Jeremiah) Blaauw, Trisha Donakowski, Travis, Justin, and Dylan Donakowski, 14 great-grandchildren; step siblings, Warren (Janet) Swartzinski, Bernice (Mike) Harkins, Janet Rohn, Neil Bellmore, Larry (Janet) Bellmore; sister-in-law, Janie McConnell; nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Howard was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph McConnell, half-brother, Ray McKenzie, son-in-law, Doug Digue and nephew, Todd McConnell.
Howard will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, loyal friend, and proud member of the Alpena community. His 70 years with Mary, his dedication to his family, and the many lives he touched through work, church, sports, and community activities will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will carry his love and legacy forward.
Visitation will take place at the Bannan Funeral Home on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. with military honors accorded him by VFW Alpena Post 2496 at 5 p.m. Visitation will continue at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Robert Richards officiating.
Interment: Evergreen Cemetery
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to First United Methodist Church.
