It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we announce the passing of Shirley Mae Thompson, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Shirley left this world peacefully on Aug. 28, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born on May 4, 1938, in the quaint town of Stonewall, Arkansas, Shirley was the beloved daughter of William Thompson and Emma Lee McMurtry.
Shirley’s life was a testament to love, family, and community. She married the love of her life, Allen Rodrick Thompson, on February 29, 1964, and together they shared a beautiful journey until his passing. Their union was blessed with five wonderful daughters: Theresa Bussey, Shirley Wright (Kim Irelan), Kim St Charles (Gary), Alison Wachowski (Chris), and Amy Brisson (Joe). Shirley’s legacy also includes 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride.
In addition to her immediate family, Shirley is survived by her brothers Ernst (Judy) Thompson and William Wesley (Betty) Thompson, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings Byrdie, Jerry, Floyd, and Alvin Thompson, along with her parents and loving husband, Allen.
Shirley was an extraordinary woman whose life was filled with passions and talents. She had a gift for nurturing both people and nature. Her vegetable and flower gardens were a testament to her green thumb, and she was known for sharing the bounty of her harvest with friends and neighbors. An amazing cook and baker, Shirley delighted in bringing people together over a warm meal and was always ready to welcome anyone to her table.
An avid birder and animal lover, she held a deep affection for all creatures and instilled a love of nature in her children and grandchildren, often sharing the joys of birdwatching with them. Shirley and Allen were adventurers at heart, exploring the vast landscapes of the United States and Canada together.
Professionally, Shirley served as an assistant manager at the Salvation Army thrift store, where her dedication and kindness touched many lives. She was actively involved in her communities in Alpena and Sun N’ Fun in Ft Myers, FL. She cherished her time as a resident at Turning Brook.
Shirley was a woman of profound empathy and compassion, always extending a helping hand or a kind word to those in need. Her warmth and generosity were felt by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

support and care during this difficult time. Shirley felt truly loved and supported by each of you.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Shirley’s memory to Blood Cancer United, Inc.
Family and friends are invited to attend the interment ceremony to honor Shirley’s life and legacy, Friday, 10/16/26, 11 a.m. at Sanborn Township Cemetery, Ossineke, MI. Though she is no longer with us, Shirley’s spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched, and her memory will be cherished forever.
