James (Jim) Young died on Aug. 5, 2026 at the age of 82 after a 16 year battle with dementia. He was born in Alpena to Jay and Carol Young in Nov. 24, 1943. Jim grew up in the tight knit community of Presque Isle on the shores of East Grand Lake. Jim graduated Alpena High School in 1961 and later attended Ferris State University. Jim proudly served his country with the US Army stationed in Alaska from 1967-1969 and continued his service in the Army Reserves until 1973 when he was honorably discharged.
Jim was hired by Presque Isle Corporation in 1970. He spent the next four decades working in limestone and the Great Lakes shipping industry where he served as VP of Operations and Sales. A born leader, Jim was well respected by his colleagues and friends. Jim continued his career after the Lafarge acquisition, serving as the VP of Chemical Sales until his retirement in 2009.
Jim was an avid golfer, hunter and fishermen. He served as a volunteer firefighter with the East Grand Lake Fire Department. In 1972 Jim married Patricia and built a home in Presque Isle, where he raised his three sons, imparting his love of Grand Lake to his children. In 1988, Jim and his family moved to Avon Lake Ohio, but always remained connected to Grand Lake, returning with his family every summer to his parent's house on Grand Lake Blvd.
Jim is survived by his wife Pat, and his sons Josh (Michelle), Jeremy (Carrie), and Adam (Shannon). Also by his grandchildren Kaitlyn, Christopher, Scarlett, and Ethan who lovingly known him as Papa. Jim is survived by his sisters Janet and Mary, and by his brother Bob (Naoko), and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at an undetermined date with burial at the Presque Isle Cemetery.
