James F. Allen of Houston, TX, formerly from Alpena, died on Aug. 18, 2026, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Jim was born in Alpena on April 9, 1956, to CPL Richard and Rosemary (Detloff) Allen Sr.
Those who knew Jim remember his smile and of course his humor, but more important the light that he brought to so many people, this seemed to come so natural to him. Jim loved to travel and helped many people in his community. Jim also assisted in scouting and was a member of the Knights of Columbus at his church. He was employed at Walgreens store for 20 years.
Jim is survived by his siblings, Christine (Dr. David) Jackson, John (Julie) Allen, David (Sheryl) Allen and Richard (Elissa) Allen Jr. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, with a special nephew and Godchild Alex Jackson of Houston, TX. And godchildren Robert Des Jardins, Maegan Brege of Alpena.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, CPL Richard and Rosemary Allen Sr., a sister, Kathleen Des Jardins, and brother-in-law Darrel Des Jardins.
Family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, at A.E. Ross Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with prayer of the rosary starting at 6:30 p.m. and parish prayer service at 7 p.m. with deacon Mike Roy officiating. Visiting will continue on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, at St. Anne Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until the Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. with Fr. Aloysius Okpala as celebrant. Inurnment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to start a scholarship in Jim's name at Alpena Community College for Business and Marketing.
