Merle Edward Muszynski age 85 of Hawks passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, August 7, 2026.
He was born February 12, 1941 in Alpena to Edward and Catherine (Maslonka) Muszynski.
Merle graduated from Posen High School in 1959. On December 2, 1961 he married Rita Darga at St. Casimir Catholic Church. Merle retired as an electrician from the Presque Isle Corporation in the year 2000. Prior to that, he sailed on the Great Lakes Fleet. He loved to share stories of his many work and life experiences with family and friends. He was a handyman who could fix anything no matter the challenge. He enjoyed hunting and being out at R Camp. His time in his deer blind was typically short-lived, since he always shot his buck before 8 a.m. on opening day.
He made spending time with his family a priority, showed pride in each member and their accomplishments, and never hung up the phone or left them without saying the words, "Love you". He worked hard, he loved hard, and he built a family legacy that all of us are proud of. He was stern, he was kind, and to all of us he was larger than life.
He is survived by his wife, Rita; five children, Renee (Jeff) Sheppler of Alpena, Randal (Lisa) Muszynski of Petoskey, Karen (Andy) Altman of Alpena, Merle Jr. "Bud" (Shari) Muszynski of Traverse City and Jenny (Gene) Soik of Posen; seven grandchildren, Nicole (Bradey) Smith, Nathan (Ashley) Smart, Evan Altman, Laci (TJ) Waterman, Alivia (Eric) Hoch, Caleb Muszynski and Rachel Muszynski; seven great grandchildren, Brayley, Iyla, Cambri, Jude, Jaxon, Lillian and Phoebe; and two sisters, Gail
Wojcik and Colleen (Rich) Wisniewski.
Merle was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Catherine and a nephew, Eric Weber.
Friends may visit at St. Casimir Catholic Church on Friday, August 14th from 10 a.m. through time of his Mass at 11 a.m.
Inurnment will take place at St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be given to American Heart Association or St. Casimir
Catholic Church in memory of Merle Muszynski.
