Artie Jane Charlton, 85, of Presque Isle, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2026. Born on September 4, 1940, in Beaumont, Texas, Artie was the beloved daughter of Everett and Samantha Smaihall, who predeceased her and left a legacy of strength and kindness that Artie carried forward in her own life.
Artie was a woman of many passions, a true outdoorswoman with a spirit as expansive as the world she cherished. Her love for the natural world was evident in her dedication to the Audubon Society, where she spent countless hours advocating for wildlife and the conservation of precious habitats. She embraced every opportunity to immerse herself in nature, often found fishing by tranquil waters or exploring new landscapes. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel to an astonishing 46 countries, where she not only witnessed the wonders of the world but also made history as one of the first Americans to white-water raft at the Rio Antigua in Mexico.
A collector at heart, Artie had a particular fondness for Cambridge Glass, curating a collection that reflected her appreciation for beauty and craftsmanship. Her home was a sanctuary filled with treasures from her travels and memories shared with loved ones.
Artie’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Ned Charlton, whose partnership was a cornerstone of her happiness. She embraced her role as a stepmother to Tracy (David) Townsend and Michael Charlton, grandchildren, Corwin and Deirdre Townsend, who brought her immense pride and joy.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of McWilliams Funeral Home.
