Yana Johnson
Yana Chertok Johnson, 38, of Alpena, died on March 7, 2026.
Born on Dec. 17, 1987, in Chernihiv, Ukraine, Yana brought joy and light into the world from the very beginning. Her journey led her to an enduring love story when she married Daniel Johnson on Aug. 23, 2009 in Cheboygan, and together they created a beautiful family, including their cherished children Nora, Nolan, and Eleanor.
Yana’s parents, Petro and Anna (Morgun) Chertok, instilled in her the values of hard work and education, which she carried throughout her life. She completed her bachelor’s degree in Ukraine before dedicating herself to her family as a stay-at-home mom. Her sister, Tatiana, along with her niece, Nicole, and many aunts and uncles, will fondly remember Yana’s unwavering support and kindness. She was preceded in death by her nephew, Daniel, whose memory she held close to her heart.
In Alpena, Yana was known for her vibrant spirit and her involvement with the Cooperative Of Alpena-Area Christian Homeschoolers. Her commitment to homeschooling was a testament to her belief in nurturing not only her own children but also supporting the educational journey of many others in the community. Yana’s home was a hub of learning and love, where she was always ready to lend a helping hand.
She was a cherished member of Fresh Water Bible Church in Alpena, and an avid gardener. Yana’s sunflowers were a sight to behold, standing tall and bright, much like her own personality. She enjoyed baking, particularly her sourdough bread, which was a favorite with her husband and loved ones. Yana’s interests reflected her nurturing soul, as she poured her heart into every loaf of bread and every plant she tended.
Above all, Yana was loving. Her family was the cornerstone of her life, and she approached every day with a heart full of love for them. Her presence was a comforting embrace, her laughter a melody that resonated in the hearts of those who knew her. Yana’s legacy is one of love, care, and community, and it will continue to flourish in the lives of her family and all who were blessed to know her.
Yana is at McWilliams Funeral Home where family will receive guests on Friday, March 13, 2026 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume at Fresh Water Bible Church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Matt Leavesley officiating. Memorial donations can be made to Fresh Water Bible Church.
