Rodney Olsen
Rodney W. Olsen, 69, of Alpena, died peacefully on Jan. 14, 2026 with his wife by his side. A devoted husband, son, brother, and friend to many, Rodney lived a life marked by service, curiosity, and quiet strength.
Born on Nov. 21, 1956, in Alpena, Rodney was a proud graduate of Alpena High School’s Class of 1974. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, making a 20-year career in telecommunications. Rising to the rank of Technical Sergeant before retiring, Rodney’s military service took him to many places around the world which instilled in him a deep appreciation for travel and discovery.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, Rodney returned to Michigan where he continued his hardworking ways. He spent almost two decades working alongside his brother-in-law on Langerfeld Farms. Whether behind the wheel of a tractor or under the hood repairing equipment, Rodney brought skill and knowledge to every task.
Rodney shared a loving life with his wife Elizabeth Olsen. Together they cultivated not only a beautiful garden but also a spirit of generosity by sharing their harvests with family and friends each season.
Rodney had a passion for photography; he had a talent for capturing moments and places through the lens of his many different cameras. Rodney’s knowledge as a self-taught photographer was impressive, he knew the ins and outs of many different cameras. His love for history–especially local history and genealogy–was matched by his fascination with antiques. These interests reflected his thoughtful nature and deep respect for the past. Rodney was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post #2496 where he enjoyed the camaraderie and many friendships.
He will be remembered by his mother Vergeline Smith; stepchildren Tracy and Eric Olson; step-grandchildren Aaden Olson, Georgia and Mila Mindykowski; siblings Joyce (Kevin) Langerfeld,
Rose Ann Olsen, Dean Olsen, David (Anne Marie) Smith, and Yvonne (Robert) Isherwood; as well as a large extended family including his mother-in-law, many brothers in law and sisters in law, along with many special nieces and nephews who cherished his quiet wisdom and kind presence.
Rodney was preceded in death by his father William Olsen; stepfather Guarden “Joe” Smith; and baby sister Mary Olsen.
