Arthur James Cochrane, a cherished husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, died peacefully on Jan. 19, 2026, at the age of 82.
Art was born on Jan. 14, 1944, in Alpena to the late Donald and Marian (LaVassar) Cochrane. Arthur’s life was a testament to love, selflessness, and the joy of simple pleasures.
Arthur was the beloved husband of Ruth Cochrane (née Standen), whom he married on Dec. 30, 1978 at St. Paul Lutheran Church – Alpena. Their union was a beautiful example of partnership and devotion that included their two daughters, Alissa (Steven) Barnard and Marian (Michael) Rocz. Art was a supportive and guiding force in their lives, instilling in them the values of kindness and generosity that he embodied.
He is survived by his brother, Michael (Joani) Cochrane, and was preceded in death by his brothers, Don “Butch” Cochrane and William Cochrane, and his sister, Carol Hulslander. Art’s legacy continues through his adoring grandchildren, Randi Mousseau-Barnard, Cassandra Barnard, Nicholas Barnard, Gabe Rocz, Noah Soik, Trevor Soik, Liam Rocz, and Chloe Rocz, who will forever cherish the memories of their doting grandfather. His nephew, Keith (Holly) Cochrane who was more of a son, will also hold dear the lessons and laughter shared with his uncle.
Art’s professional life was marked by his dedication and hard work. He was a respected member of the community, known for his willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need.
An avid outdoorsman, Art found solace and joy in hunting and fishing, activities that allowed him to connect with nature and enjoy the tranquility of the great outdoors. His hobbies also included stamp collecting and reading, which provided him with endless hours of enjoyment and reflection. Art was a published writer, sharing his thoughts and experiences, further showcasing his talent and intellect.
Art’s love for gardening was evident to all who knew him. He was particularly known for selling his produce, especially his prized tomatoes, in front of Tractor Supply, where his friendly demeanor and green thumb made him a local favorite.
A lover of sports and entertainment, Art could often be found watching football, cheering on his favorite teams with the same passion he brought to every aspect of his life. He also enjoyed watching episodes of “Monk” and “M.A.S.H.,” finding comfort and humor in the familiar characters and stories. Art also enjoyed tinkering with woodworking and was always up for a good card game or game of cribbage with family and friends. He was a long-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Arthur James Cochrane will be remembered as a loving and selfless man who made the world a better place simply by being in it. He will be dearly missed yet his deep bond with his family will continue.
Art has been taken for cremation with a memorial service to be announced at a later date. McWilliams Funeral Home has assisted the family.
