James Modrak

He was born on Aug. 28, 1950, in Alpena, Michigan, to Alex and Frances (Kozlowski) Modrak. Jim was known for his easy-going personality and unwavering kindness to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Jim graduated from Alpena Catholic Central High School, where he showcased his competitive spirit through basketball and track. He also participated in Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball during the summers and continued playing baseball throughout his college years while attending Alpena Community College. For many years afterwards, he played on the Holiday Inn softball team, where he continued to enjoy the camaraderie of team sports.

Jim worked as a control room processor for Lafarge, now known as the Central Plains Cement Company, where he worked for most of his life. His steady presence and professionalism reflected his commitment to doing his best, starting at the Alpena plant and moving to the Sugar Creek, Mo. plant in 2002 until his retirement in 2014.

In addition to his professional and athletic endeavors, Jim served honorably in the United States Army for two years during the Vietnam War, an experience that deeply influenced his perspective on life.

Jim loved to travel; he cherished the moments spent exploring the great outdoors with his family. From annual camping trips on Lake Charlevoix, to checking out the sites in Hawaii, to adventures in national parks, he was always up for new experiences. He spent many hours on the golf course, and in retirement found his dream job as a golf cart guy at Royal Meadows, where he sunk a hole in one in 2019.

Jim was a beloved husband, dad, and papa who leaves behind countless cherished memories, especially among those who were fortunate to call him friend and family. He will be greatly missed.

Jim is survived by his adoring wife of 50 years, Susan (Schultz) Modrak; daughters, Jill Modrak-Killian (Kevin) and Andrea Holmes (Tim); and grandchildren, Jackson, Lucy, Carter, Loralei, Mason and Piper.

He is preceded in death by his parents Alex and Frances Modrak; his sister, Patricia Price; nephews, Thomas Price and Cody Anderson, and in-laws, Richard and Betty Schultz.

Memorial visitation will take place on Monday, Dec. 8, 2025, at the Bannan Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 1 p.m. with Deacon Michael Roy officiating, followed by military honors by VFW Alpena Post 2496.
