Richard Hamilton, a devoted family man and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, in Shallotte, NC, at the age of 87. Born on November 7, 1937, in Alpena, MI, Richard’s life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and a zest for life that inspired all who knew him.

Richard’s early years in Alpena were marked by his remarkable athletic achievements. A standout fullback and wide receiver, he left an indelible mark on Catholic Central, earning a place in their hall of fame. His prowess on the field led him to play in the inaugural Sun Bowl, proudly representing Wyoming.

In the late 1950s, Richard answered the call to serve his country, joining the US Army Signal Corps. His time in the military was a testament to his commitment and strength of character, qualities he carried with him throughout his life.

After his service, Richard embarked on a long and fruitful career with General Motors in Michigan. Starting on the assembly line, he dedicated over 30 years to the company, embodying the values of diligence and integrity. His work ethic and leadership were an inspiration to his colleagues and family alike.

In 2002, Richard and his beloved wife Brenda made the move to the Shallotte area, drawn by the warmth of the community and the proximity to dear friends. Their marriage, which spanned 37 years, was a beacon of love and partnership.

Richard had a passion for life that extended far beyond his career. He enjoyed playing pool, softball, and golf, and could often be found sharing his love of music through church singing. His sense of wonder and joy was evident in his fascination with magic tricks, which delighted friends and family.

Preceded in death by his parents and siblings Phyllis, Bob, Dora, and Raylene, Richard is survived by his cherished wife Brenda; daughters Jenny Hamilton of Portland, ME, Jennifer Salerno (John) of California, and Tara Callison (John) of Shallotte, NC; as well as nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister, Rosalie Retzbach, and countless friends and loved ones whose lives he touched with his kindness and humor.
