Kenneth Wieten

Kenneth Duane Wieten, 91, of Ossineke, Michigan, died peacefully Oct. 8, 2025 surrounded by loving family.

Ken was born in Grand Rapids to Henry and Theresa (Seif) Wieten.

He graduated from Grand Rapids Creston High School, Class of 1952. Shortly after, he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957, stationed in Oahu, Hawai’i–a place that held some of his fondest memories throughout his life. In 1959, Ken married the love of his life, Barbara Dvorak and they remained devoted to each other for 66 wonderful years. In 1961 Ken graduated from Michigan State University. After graduating, Ken and Barbara relocated to the Detroit area where they raised their three boys, Joe, Tom and John. Ken built a long and successful career in purchasing, including working as Director of Purchasing for TRW Vehicle Safety Systems.

Upon retirement, Ken and Barbara made their home in Ossineke, Michigan where they pursued the simple joys of life “up north” at the beach. Ken loved golfing, biking, and enjoying “Beer O’Clock” on the beach with friends and family. Both Ken and Barbara were deeply involved in their community and played an integral role in building the local playground, Shin-Ga-Ba Shores–a project that continues to bring joy to many families.

Ken and Barbara spent many winters in Hawai’i where Ken enjoyed daily walks along the shore and meeting friends to “Talk Story”. Returning to the islands where he once served brought him happiness throughout his later years.

Remaining to cherish Ken’s memory are spouse, Barbara (Dvorak) Wieten; sister Barbara & her husband Frank Vandermoere; children, Joe & Robin, Tom & Gina, John & Anne; grandchildren, McKenna, Jordan Grace, Avery, Elliot and Devyn.

To commemorate our father, Ken Wieten, we have collaborated with the Sanborn Township Board to establish a dedicated fund for the upkeep and maintenance of the Shin-Ga-Ba Shores playground, in Ken’s name.

This is the community playground in Ossineke. Ken helped with the purchasing and construction of this playground. He enjoyed sharing stories of the building of this playground with friends and family, and also loved watching his grandchildren play here.

Those wishing to contribute are invited to donate to this fund.
