Joan Romstadt
Joan Anne Romstadt, 89, of Alpena passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving husband and family on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at Medilodge of Alpena.
Joan Anne Dreier was born in Eaton Rapids, Michigan on October 12, 1935, to the late Alden and Lillian (Dippman) Dreier. On August 16, 1958, she married William Romstadt; together they had 67 wonderful years of dedicated marriage. “Joanie Girl” was the love of “Billy Boy’s” life. She was a member of All Saints Parish, treasurer of St. Vincent de Paul for many years, avid bowler and an inspiration to many youth through her 40+ years as director of the Alpena Youth Bowling Association. Her countless contributions to the sport of bowling were honored as the lone inductee into the Alpena Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1996.
Joan was a lady and carried herself as such. She had exceptional taste in many things and always desired the finest for her kids. She made sure their shoes were leather, bedsheet thread count was at least 200, and their chocolate was not Hershey. She frequented LeFave’s Pharmacy for her favorite Russell Stover “Mint Dream” and chocolate covered caramels, and if you wanted a late night drive by your boyfriend’s house, Joanie was your girl.
Her love of Christmas is apparent in her home with the perpetual display of her Christmas tree, manger, Salvation Army dolls, and a plethora of Santas to greet you still to this day. During the Christmas season, you could hear Joanie and her friend Annie singing, and ringing the Salvation Army bells, at the Save-A-Lot. Tuesday night bowling brought cheers of “Tutti Frutti” if the girls were throwing strikes, and her kids were so thankful for the long hours Mom worked at the bowling alley, so they could bowl for free … thanks, Mom!
Joan is dearly missed by her family and friends; we look forward to reuniting with her one day in our heavenly home.
Surviving are her husband, Bill; six children, William (Jeanne) Romstadt, Jr., Michael (Kathy) Romstadt, Laura (Duane) Mills, Beth Romstadt, Mark (Michelle) Romstadt, Susan (Shawn) Quarandillo; 22 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Thomas (Gemma) Dreier, Mary Sue Ostafi, Theresa (James) Ballantyne, Regina Reynolds, Martha Dreier; sister-in-law, Carrie Magnuson; several nieces and nephews, and her best friend Carole Pelleran whose friendship was steadfast right until the end.
Joan was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Romstadt; brother, Norman “Freddie” Dreier and his wife Janice; sister, Annette “Nettie” Dreier; brothers-in-law, Sam Reynolds and Russell Strausbaugh.
