Theodore Adolph Townsend, 84, of Black River, passed away Monday, August 11, 2025, at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena.

Ted was born on June 13, 1941, in Detroit, to the late Boyd and Helen (Paul) Townsend. He worked as a deputy for the Alcona County Sheriff’s Department, retiring as a sergeant in January of 2001. On May 1, 1993, he married Kaye (Rajala) Bedford. Ted was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church, its choir, and enjoyed his guitar and singing. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and trips to the casinos, but most importantly having his family and friends around.

Surviving are his wife, Kaye; 4 children, Theodore (Anita) Townsend, Jr., Dawn (Mark) Riedy, Mona (Bill) Butterson, Patty Townsend; 3 grandchildren, Gennie, Robert, Rachel; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 step-children, Greg Bedford, Becky (Aaron) Bedford-Osborn; 3 step-grandchildren, Zacheri, Saraya, Cameron; 5 step-great-grandchildren; 3 siblings, Roy (Loretta) Townsend, Edward Townsend, Gail (Jon) Schultz; sister-in-law, Norma Townsend; mothers of his children, Kathy Hills, Mary Townsend; many nieces and nephews.

Ted was preceded in death by 4 siblings, William Townsend, Charles Townsend, Helen Gohl, Boyd Townsend.

Memorial visitation will take place at Hope Lutheran Church on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, from 10 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 12 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Bryan R. Salminen officiating. Cremation arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
