Michael Nichols
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael P. Nichols, who died peacefully on July 5, 2025, at the University of Michigan Hospital Ann Arbor. Michael was born on March 19, 1945, in Flint, Michigan, to the late James H. and Betty (Brady) Nichols.
Michael graduated from Flushing High School in 1963 and went on to earn a degree in Forestry from Michigan State University in 1967. On December 16, 1967, he married Judy MacArthur, and together they built a beautiful family and a lifetime of memories.
A proud veteran, Michael served his country with honor in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. His professional life was marked by dedication and service, including roles at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Powell Production Oil and Gas, and the Alpena County Assessor’s Office.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Michael was committed to his community. He was a past Master of the Masonic Lodge in Atlanta, MI as well as Eaton Rapids, MI. Mike served as past president and board member of the Brush Creek Mill, Hillman where he coordinated Music at the Mill, a monthly gathering of musicians. Children in the community will fondly remember him from his time volunteering at children’s story time strumming his guitar and leading songs at the Hillman Public Library. One of his life highlights was participating with the Besser Men’s Chorus. He was so proud to sing his last concert in June. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he served as a licensed lay minister at Calvary Episcopal Church.
An avid outdoorsman, Michael found joy in golf, sailing, fishing, and a variety of outdoor sports. Perhaps most of all he loved Michigan State football and basketball as well as the challenge of a good game of cribbage!
