Helen Gohl

Helen Ann Gohl, 91, of Alpena, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, surrounded by the warmth of her family’s love.

Born on May 12, 1934, in Detroit, Helen was the cherished daughter of the late Francoius and Helen Townsend. Her life was a testament to the enduring power of love and faith.

Helen’s heart found its match when she married Bill Gohl, Sr. on February 9, 1952, and together they embarked on a journey of love and partnership that would last until Bill’s passing on Nov. 15, 2023. Their union was blessed with three children: William Gohl, Jr. (Cathy Schultz), Richard (Marina) Gohl, and Jo Ann (Jim) Taylor. Helen’s legacy continued to flourish through her beloved grandchildren: Cassandra (Fred) Suszek, William III (Shellie) Gohl, Terri (Gene) Northrup, Tracy Lester (Josh Taylor), Richard Gohl, Christopher Gohl, Kevin Gohl, and the late Tim Lester. She was also a proud great-grandmother to 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is survived by her brothers, Roy (Loretta) Townsend, Theodore (Kaye) Townsend, her sister, Geraldine (Jon) Schultz, her sister’s in-law, Mabel Townsend, and Norma Townsend. Her extended family included many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved deeply. Helen was preceded in death by her brothers, William, Charles, Boyd Jr., and her daughter in-law Karen Gohl. Helen’s life was characterized by her unwavering Christian faith. She was a longtime member of the Greely Baptist Church, where she often led the singing, her voice a testament to her devotion and joy in worship. Her love for music was matched only by her love for reading, which provided her with endless hours of solace and reflection. Throughout her life, Helen was the embodiment of a loving and faith-filled spirit. Her kindness and compassion touched the lives of all who knew her. She was a woman of strength and grace, always putting the needs of her family and friends before her own. She will be dearly missed.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at McWilliams Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until the memorial service at 1 p.m. with Pastor Bruce Rubin officiating.
