VERNA MAY MEYER
Verna May Meyer, 90, of Alpena, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025, surrounded by the warmth of her family’s love.
Born on Aug. 15, 1934, in Spruce, she was the cherished daughter of the late Leonard and Viola (Martin) Hanson. Verna’s life was a tapestry of dedication to her family, service to her community, and a testament to the joys of simple pleasures.
Verna’s journey through life was shared for 67 beautiful years with her beloved husband, Bob Meyer, who preceded her in death. Together, they built a legacy of love and family, nurturing their children Donna and her husband Patrick Green of Presque Isle, the late Donald, and Wesley of Alpena. Verna’s role as a grandmother was one she held dear, leaving behind fond memories with her grandchildren Jeremie (Stacy) Amwake, Cole (LeAnn) Meyer, Lisa (Erin) Meyer, and Katie (Andrew) Blaine. Her four great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Addison, Ireland, and Christopher, will carry forward her spirit of generosity and affection.
Verna was the loving sister of Marlene Jobson and was preceded in death by her brothers Ivan, Raymond, and Lester Hanson. Her family was the cornerstone of her existence, and she instilled in them the values of love, kindness, and the importance of staying connected.
Professionally, Verna dedicated 35 years as the Food Service Supervisor for the Alpena Public Schools. Her commitment to nurturing the bodies and spirits of countless children was a source of great pride and fulfillment. She was a familiar and comforting presence in the lives of many young people, guiding them with a gentle hand and a warm smile.
Verna’s interests and hobbies were as diverse as they were passionate. She was an avid quilter, sharing her talent every week at her beloved Immanuel Lutheran Church. Her hands were rarely still, as she created beautiful quilts that warmed the bodies and hearts of those she loved. The casino’s bright lights and sounds were a source of excitement and joy for Verna, where she enjoyed the thrill of the game and the companionship of friends.
Swimming at the Plaza Pool was a weekly ritual that Verna looked forward to, as it was a time for laughter, exercise, and friendship. She and Bob also cherished their annual RV trips to Florida, creating a treasure trove of memories along the sun-kissed roads and in the warm embrace of the sunshine state.
Verna’s commitment to her faith and community was evident in her long-time membership at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life, providing her with strength and solace in times of need and a sense of purpose and joy in her daily endeavors.
Those who knew Verna will remember her as the epitome of loving and kind. Her presence was a comfort, her laughter a melody, and her life a lesson in unconditional love.
Per her wishes Verna has been taken for cremation with a private graveside service to take place at a later date. Please consider a memorial donation to the Huron Humane Society in her honor. McWilliams Funeral Home has assisted the family.
