SEAN RIVARD

Dr. Sean Rivard, of Ossineke, MI, a distinguished and compassionate physician, passed away on May 10, 2025 at the age of 62 due to complications of a rare neurological disease Multi System Atrophy. His passing marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to the service of others, both in his professional and personal endeavors.

Dr. Rivard enjoyed a lengthy and impactful career as an anesthesiologist, during which he saved countless lives and made significant contributions to healthcare in Michigan. His generosity extended beyond the operating room, as he devoted considerable time to teaching nurses, medical students, and resident physicians, thereby shaping the future of healthcare with his vast knowledge and impressive dedication. Sean was born Sept. 6, 1962, to Virginia and Hendrick Rivard in Grosse Pointe, MI. He was a 1980 graduate of Grosse Pointe High School, a 1984 graduate of Kalamazoo College, a 1988 graduate of The American Medical School of the Caribbean and competed Anesthesiology residency at University of Michigan in 1992 where he was Chief Resident.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Rivard was a gifted private pilot with an instrument rating and over 2500 hours of flight time. As the proud owner of a Beechcraft Bonanza, he shared many adventures with friends and family, exploring the skies with enthusiasm and skill. His generosity knew no bounds, as he frequently donated his time and airplane to transport ill patients to critical treatments at facilities like the Mayo Clinic, as well as flying rescue animals to their new homes across the country.

Dr. Rivard was an accomplished athlete with a passion for water sports, particularly kiteboarding, sailing, and scuba diving/snorkeling. His talents as a sailor were showcased by his participation in the Port Huron to Mackinac races. He and his wife also enjoyed many trips bareboating in the BVI where he served as Captain. Additionally, he was an avid downhill skier, half marathon runner and tennis player.

A devoted and loving husband and father, Dr. Rivard was always present for his family and friends, offering unwavering support and assistance whenever needed. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Teresa Griffith; his son, Justin (Hillary Crawford) of Traverse City; and his daughter, Allyson of Lexington, Kentucky. He also leaves behind his siblings: Greg (Chin), David (Hillary) of Grosse Pointe, Ginny Matheson (Michael) of DeWitt, and Kelly Keenan (Tom) of St. Charles, Missouri. Sean is also remembered fondly by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his cherished mother and father, Virginia and Hendrick Rivard. Additionally, he is survived by his loyal dogs, Gigi and Louis, and his African grey parrot, Peeper.

Dr. Rivard will be forever missed and loved by all who knew him as an exceptionally kind, talented, and gifted individual with a spirit for travel and adventure. His legacy of compassion, skill, and generosity will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of Michigan or Feeding America.

Family will receive friends at McWilliams Funeral Home on Sunday, June 8, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 6 p.m. Visiting will continue Monday at St. Anne Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until the mass at 11 a.m. with Fr. Emmanuel Barr officiating.
