CRAIG STEWART SCHEUNER

Craig Stewart Scheuner, 71, a lifelong resident of Alpena, Michigan, passed away at his home on Huron Beach Road on April 2, 2025.

Craig was born on Sept. 13, 1953, in Detroit to Donalene and Howard Scheuner. He grew up in Alpena and graduated from Alpena High School with the Class of 1971. A true son of Northern Michigan, Craig had a deep love for the outdoors. His adventurous spirit drew him to leisure activities that encluded fishing, sailing, skiing, snowmobiling, motorbiking, and countless others that celebrated the beauty of his surroundings.

Craig dedicated more than 50 years to his career in the construction and excavation industry. He began working alongside his father and brother at Scheuner Construction Company, later founding his own business. His skills and work ethic contributed to the installation of countless miles of gas, sewer, and water lines throughout Northern Michigan. One of his early achievements was the construction of Ludington Municipal Marina. Over the course of his career, Craig was engaged in both private and public sector construction projects. In the public sector, he improved parks, cities, and recreational areas across Michigan and beyond. He built numerous trails, boardwalks, campsites, and park facilities. He valued quality craftsmanship, his frienships with other contractors and industry workers, and the lasting contributions he was able to make for the benefit of citizens and their communities.

Although Craig often traveled for work, he cherished his time at home on the shores of Lake Huron. Over the years, he designed and built four homes for himself along El Cajon and Huron Beaches in Alpena–special places he shared with family and friends. Craig will be remembered not only for his hard work, but for his kind and generous heart, his sense of humor, and his strength of character in the face of life’s challenges. He was a beloved brother to his sister, Donalyn, a childhood companion of his older brother, Howard, and a dear son to his parents.

Craig is survived by his sister, Donalyn Scheuner of Hampstead, New Hampshire; his uncle, Orland Scheuner of Manchester, New Hampshire; his niece, Nicole (Scheuner) Mousseau; his nephew, Howard Scheuner, both of Broadview Heights, Ohio; cousins Karen Kausch, Jon Carr, and Sherri Anderson of Alpena; and many additional cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donalene and Howard Scheuner; his brother, Howard Scheuner; and his son, Craig Scheuner. Craig’s adventurous spirit, determination, and warm heart will be dearly missed by all who knew and cared for him.

A memorial visitation will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alpena on May 9 from 10:00 a.m. to noon, followed by a service at noon with the Rev. John Shipman officiating. Arrangements are being handled by McWilliams Funeral Home.
