Victor P. Nerkowski, Jr., 83, of Alpena passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025, MyMichigan Medical Center-Alpena.
Victor was born Nov. 21, 1941, in Alpena to the late Victor and Virginia (Tadajewski) Nerkowski. Vic graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1960, and Alpena Community College with an associate’s degree in 1962. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a tank gunner/loader, tank driver, and as a diesel and tank mechanic. He returned to Alpena continuing his employment at National Gypsum and later LaFarge as a millwright. In 1967, he met the love of his life Camille Olewnik following the Detroit riots and on April 20, 1968, he married her. She preceded him in death on April 17, 2020.
Victor stayed physically active throughout his lifetime, riding his bike across town to the cement plant, running 8 miles after work, and staying active at the Alpena Wellness Center “pumping iron” up until last year. He enjoyed playing cards with friends, riding in the Michigander Bike Tour with his wife, children and grandchildren for 20 years (1996-2016), and men’s softball and volleyball leagues for 20 years. Together with Camille they enjoyed trips to Jamaica, Hawaii, Mount Rushmore. Vic was a family man, loved watching his children grow up playing sports, instruments in band and orchestra, as well as going out to concerts in Alpena and around Michigan with his wife.
Surviving is one daughter, Paula (Mike) Berenkowski; 6 grandchildren, Jonas, Benjamin, John, Luke, Joey, Lydia; daughter-in-law, Michelle Walkowski; siblings, Helen (Leonard) Buszka, Frank (Pam) Nerkowski; several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Nerkowski was preceded in death by his son, Allen.
Visitation will take place Monday at Bannan Funeral Home from 2 to 6 p.m. with military honors by VFW Alpena Post 2496 at 5 p.m. followed by a parish prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at St. Anne Church of All Saints Parish from 10 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Emmanuel Finbarr officiating.
