JAMES WILLIAM DeWYRE

July 31, 1945 – March 5, 2025

James William DeWyre, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, in Alpena, at the age of 79. Born on July 31, 1945, in Plattsburgh, NY, to the late William and Ruth (Rhode) DeWyre, James, affectionately known as Jim, lived a life marked by dedication, innovation, and joy.

Jim is survived by his loving siblings, Michael (Joy) DeWyre, Larry (Karen) DeWyre, Judy Lincoln, and sister-in-law Mary DeWyre. Along with many nieces, nephews, and several brothers and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his brother, Terry DeWyre. He was a beacon of kindness and strength within his family, and his presence was a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.

On April 22, 1967, Jim married the love of his life, Linda Szymanski, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love and laughter. Their union was blessed with two sons, Timothy DeWyre (Lori Markowski) and Robin (Michelle) DeWyre, and a granddaughter, Cora DeWyre, who lit up his world. Jim’s role as a family man was paramount, and he instilled in his children and granddaughter the values of hard work, integrity, and the importance of family.

Professionally, Jim was a respected project engineer at Besser Company, where he dedicated 40 years of service. His ingenuity was recognized through patents registered in his name, a testament to his skill and creativity in his field.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was deeply involved in his community. He shared his love for sports by coaching and serving in various capacities with the Huron Shores Little League for a decade and the Alpena Hockey Association where he coached as well. As an ice scheduler at the Mich-e-ke-wis ice rink, he ensured that the joy of skating was accessible to many. His dedication to nurturing young athletes was a reflection of his generous spirit.

Jim’s greatest inspiration was his grandfather, Garnet Rhode, who taught him much about life and the value of perseverance. This influence was evident in Jim’s many passions, which included taking meticulous care of his lawn, operating his tractors, and engaging in wood working. A lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers, he enjoyed collecting baseball cards with his son Rob and deer hunting with his son Tim. His love for baseball was lifelong, having started playing at age 13 for the Hawks men’s team in the Presque Isle County league followed by Alpena Community College baseball, and continuing for many years in the Alpena softball league.

One of Jim’s proudest achievements was building his own cabin, a labor of love that served as a testament to his skill. The time spent with his granddaughter Cora was among his most treasured moments, as he imparted wisdom and shared in the simple joys of life. He will be deeply missed.
