Betty Lou Staggs, 91, of Alpena, passed away peacefully on Feb. 11, 2025.
Born on June 16, 1933, in Alpena, Betty was the cherished daughter of the late Gilbert and Gwendolyn (Dark) Ludlow. She was the beloved wife of the late James Staggs, with whom she shared five decades with until his passing on May 5, 1999. Betty’s life was one of unwavering dedication to her family and friends. She was the second youngest sibling to Edward, Robert, Laurence, Miles, Gwendolyn, and Loretta, all of whom preceded her in passing. Her memory will be treasured by her numerous nieces and nephews, who will carry forward her legacy of generosity and care. Betty’s journey with James began on Aug. 13, 1949, moving to Westland shortly thereafter. She would eventually make her way back to Alpena, where she became a well-known and respected member of the community for over 45 years.
An adventurous spirit, Betty loved to travel, exploring new places and experiencing different cultures. She also enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino, where her presence was a source of joy for all who knew her. Her interests reflected her zest for life and her ability to find happiness in every moment.
Betty is at McWilliams Funeral Home where visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Leslie Nye officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband James at Evergreen Cemetery.
