George “Skip” Baker, 81, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Skip was born Jan. 3, 1943, in Alpena, to the late George and June (Franklin) Belanger. He was the third of six children. Skip spent his youth in Alpena but moved across the country to California to begin his lifelong career in construction. After years of traveling the country building dams, he eventually settled in Seattle, Washington, where he lived until he retired. Once he retired, he moved back to Alpena for his retirement. Skip had a deep love for horses and for a time rode search and rescue for King County in Washington, which was something he was very proud of.

Surviving are his son, Jeff Baker, Milt Baker; daughters, Annette Leichner, Lori Laskas; sisters, Judith Bartz, Vicki Bowras; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Lynn Baker, Jo Baker; and a host of family and friends.

Skip was preceded in death by his sons, Mark R. Baker; brothers, Mick Baker, Cork Baker; and brother-in-law, Gordon Bartz.

A celebration of life will take place Saturday at Ossineke Township Hall from 1 to 4 p.m. Arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
