CHARLES GEORGE BECKER

Charles George Becker, 88, of Presque Isle, passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, at Besser Senior Living.

Charles was born Dec. 10, 1935, in Alpena to the late Charles and Margaret (Baumgart) Becker. While in high school, Charles was very involved in football and was the team captain. After high school, he went on to serve in the United States Army. Charles went on to become a very successful salesman, selling various novelty items. He sold so much he was able to pay cash for a brand-new 1956 Ford Crown Victoria. On Jan. 25, 1957, he married Cleta McDonald. Charles then went to work for Everett Smith at the Renault Dealership and the Frank Doan Dealership. He then went to work selling cars at McCoy Pontiac and Cadillac Dealership of Alpena. For many years he was their top salesman. Charles then went out on his own to start Becker’s Used Cars on the corner of 3rd Avenue and Lockwood. He owned the downtown Shell gas station and started Becker’s Recreation vehicles and purchased the Honda and Polaris franchise in Alpena. His last endeavor was starting Becker’s Excavating. Charles was a member of American Legion, Eagles, Elks, Moose, and the local VFW Post 2496.

Anytime business was slow, Charles would keep busy running his semi over the road which took him into training semi-drivers how to load and unload car haulers. When drivers got in tough spots he would come and help them out.

Surviving are his wife, Cleta; five children, Gail Black, Brenda Hughes, SueAnn Galbraith, Jennifer Smith, Charlee Becker; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacqueline Brown and two grandchildren.

Cremation arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
