Shirley D. Thomas, of Alpena, passed away peacefully on Sept. 26, 2024, born on April 1, 1931, in Sparr, Michigan.
The daughter of Violet and William Wolf, Shirley grew up in a warm, nurturing environment alongside her brothers William Jr. and Lloyd. Her childhood laid the foundations for the remarkable woman she would become -- kind, thoughtful, and wise. These traits would become her legacy, touching the lives of everyone she knew.
Shirley's heart found its match when she married Jay Thomas, with whom she shared a beautiful life until his passing in 2000. Together, they built a family rooted in love and mutual respect. Shirley's role as a mother to her sons Tom (Donna Repke), Terry (Kathryn), and Tim (Chelle), was one she cherished deeply. Her guidance and wisdom helped mold them into the men they are today, and her influence is evident in their character and achievements.
The joys of motherhood only multiplied as Shirley welcomed her grandchildren: Spencer Thomas, Chad Thomas, Stephanie Suszek, Kara Thomas, Kaitlin Crowell, Andrew Thomas, Bethany Duperreault, Jessica Timm, and Bethany Sanford. Each held a special place in her heart, and she played an instrumental part in their lives. Shirley's legacy continued to flourish with the arrival of her 10 great-grandchildren, who will carry the memories of her love and stories into the future.
Shirley's interests and talents were as diverse as they were delightful. She possessed a musical soul, playing piano, organ, and accordion with a passion that resonated in every note. Her love for music was a gift she shared generously.
Staying active was important to Shirley, and she could often be found riding her bike, a testament to her dedication to health and vitality. She also relished quiet rides, moments of reflection and appreciation for the simple beauty of the world around her.
As we bid farewell to Shirley, we celebrate a life well-lived -- a life full of love, music, and the quiet strength that defined her. Her family takes solace in knowing that she is now reunited with her beloved husband Jay, her parents, and her brothers.
Shirley's life will be honored in a private memorial service at a later date. Her story does not end with her passing but continues in the lives she touched, the family she nurtured, and the countless memories that will be cherished forever. We take comfort in the knowledge that her kindness and wisdom will continue to echo through the generations, a lasting tribute to a remarkable woman.
